Mercury 03:36
Put on your old coat you said it reminds you of those violet years Waltzing in the balance on the cutting room floor Dressed up in the 60s, you looked just like your mother did Feathers on your shoulder shout your challenge to the day It’s a weight A weight too great to bear The undergrowth takes hold Now I don’t know which way to go Tell them to join loud, to meet you at the picket line Stronger with each voice, you will bring the ceasefire Reaching out across the border, skimming stones as best we can Keep a weather eye on, only now I understand I wish I’d taken more time when what was yours was yours and mine Old songs in your bloodstream, you knew every line Sinking with the ebony as the cracks begin to show Addicted to the the highwire that once belonged to you It’s a weight A weight too great to bear The undergrowth takes hold Now I don’t know which way to go You are still the same, the same but ever changed Floating on the mercury trapped in a lucid dream I'll come and see you soon to look you in your cotton eyes Sifting through the blackouts for a part of you that's near It’s a weight A weight too great to bear The undergrowth takes hold Now I don’t know which way to go I don't know myself You don't know yourself We don't know ourselves at all

So tired of giving this fight Of never feeling the warmth you get from the light Although the sun it shines, the sun it shines The darkness it will come as the sky caves in Takes me down and holds me there, pins me to the ground We each go down, everyone, in sorrow when the day is done We each go down, everyone, in sorrow when the day is done Feel the static fill my lungs Words I should never say sit upon my tongue I was robbed of these years, robbed of these years Cover up the cracks, movement sets the scene. Leave me here, let me go, I hope you will forget We each go down, everyone, in sorrow when the day is done We each go down, everyone, in sorrow when the day is done We each go down, everyone, in sorrow when the day is done We each go down, everyone, in sorrow when the day is done I sleep on the edge when sleep’s on my side Breathe the highs and the lows in the space where they collide I’ll live in the shadows of my brightest day In the half light I'll remain, keeping you at bay Pick me up, put me on your back, I heard the mourners say We each go down, everyone, in sorrow when the day is done We each go down, everyone, in sorrow when the day is done We each go down, everyone, in sorrow when the day is done We each go down, everyone, in sorrow when the day is done

Strandline 03:49
Nothing to lose as we set out to sea Dancing on uncertain ground Fast pace, high hopes, slow conversation No thought to the fall line above Your words made their way down from the north In a book wrapped in promise and string Like-hearted souls, awkward beginnings Drifting in waters unknown Too many miles to cross this time The harder we row the further the strandline Too many miles to cross this time The harder we row the further the strandline Drawn to our own edges, ripped at the seams Unravelling thoughts linger here So sure of your roots as I aimlessly scatter Treading salt water between You wandered too far where I couldn't follow Tied to a sinking stone For one last time I’ll hold you as mine Sorries carry us into the night Sorries carry us into the night We’ll meet here each year in the same passing places Running in rivers below Bright comes October, we journey to winter With solitary steps in the snow Solitary steps in the snow

I walked with my father here many years ago Slow and long in evensong, faith will find us here Lead me to the shoreline where the dead seas hold no tide In this worn out tower I’ve found my place to hide Women's voices darkening the high Novembered air Spinning songs carried high above the wild and heavy storm Bruised skies give no shelter, still we journey on Rocked by sleep to reach the northern soil A song among the stones It’s better that you know the bones of winter lay along the western edge His prayers they have grown Tell us a story of your own Dreaming of a fevered sea song, prints woven in the light Worn away by the restlessness, waiting for a sign Lost in empty spaces in the layering of the walls The rise and fall of the embers’ glow echoed in the hall A song among the stones It’s better that you know the bones of winter lay along the western edge His prayers they have grown Tell us a story of your own Silver slowly rises over Iona’s distant shore The silence of the waiting sons at the heart of these sea roads Scattered on the turning fields by the singing winds Remember all the faces of those who journey on A song among the stones It’s better that you know the bones of winter lay along the western edge His prayers they have grown Tell us a story of your own

Slowest Days 04:59
And I woke in the fog of a memory; in that instant I didn’t know where But I hid in the crook of your arm ‘til the morning began to appear The radio was broadcasting the news From some other room somewhere The slowest days bloom silent and grey I’m just glad you’re here We pieced together scenes between the ins and outs All the while your hands folded behind your back Another bird laughed at the fact we missed the last train Strangers, green-eyed as I pulled you near And as we walked you sang a tune you used to know I hung on every word, so I could fill the gaps The slowest days bloom silent and grey I’m just glad you’re here The slowest days bloom quiet and blue I’m just glad it’s you One foot at a time you tried a straight line Give me the slow motion just to hear the sound of you alone The slowest days bloom silent and grey I’m just glad you’re here The slowest days bloom quiet and blue I’m just glad it’s you

She was only sixteen years From earth scarred by battle, trampled by fears She stared into the darkness and plotted her escape Leaving all she’d ever known Familiar sounds, the one who’d watched her grow A leather bag patched up at the seams To hold it all Bound by the carrying stream What’s gone before shapes the shifting scene With every step we take out from the gloom I only hope the light will get here soon New-found views of a stark unknown Autumn falls on her new life alone Worry folded in every corner of her heart, Just carry on Arriving with the turning tide The queen of winter sits by her side Strong hands guide her through the wrecking nights She won’t let go Bound by the carrying stream What’s gone before shapes the shifting scene With every step we take out from the gloom I only hope the light will get here soon Weathered by the aching storm That never forgets where you’ve come from Memories ring louder with each word Their voices speak of crisp new air, time has won How rivers guide the ageing sun Those same winds cradle her home again Where she can sing along Bound by the carrying stream What’s gone before shapes the shifting scene With every step we take out from the gloom I only hope the light will get here soon

There is no mercy, no one to take the blame Ready to leave, lifted without a fear The time has now come, shades of grey turn to blue The night whispers its last The dream that was dreamed is true In the small hours we will gather here Just to hear you say Rise with the growing dawn Caught in the rhythm of the day Lighter on earth, heavier in our hearts Take to the seasons, find our own steady tread Clasping our hands, dappled with green and gold We rest at your table, caught in the undertow I’ll think of you early watching the wide open sky Shouldered we stand The lips that were sealed have cried In the small hours we will gather here Just to hear you say Rise with the growing dawn Caught in the rhythm of the day Be still and breathe easy, the night a passing friend Words lying heavy, they take no shelter now The crowds in reverse sorrowing far from home We must not tarry The bird that was trapped has flown In the small hours we will gather here Just to hear you say Rise with the growing dawn Caught in the rhythm of the day In the small hours we will gather here Just to hear you say Rise with the growing dawn Caught in the rhythm of the day In the small hours we will think of you And how it used to be Rising with the growing dawn

Keep me moving on Keep me pointed away from wherever I’ve come from Never let me rest, If I’ve already tasted it then it can’t be the best Watching strangers shuffle down these broken streets Keep me out of touch, out of reach Keep me moving on Never standing still If boredom is the illness then movement is the pill Ever changing views, You won’t find me mourning yesterday's news Music fills these open halls Let me dance, let me spin, let me fall Keep me moving on I’ll write you a song I'll sing to you someday I’ll buy you a book and I’ll read to you everyday Send you pictures of a home I’ll live in one day If I can quiet my panicked thoughts that lead me Lead me astray Keep me moving on Roaming into hazy nights I’m drinking to forget but never losing sight I can’t hold your gaze, Let me keep my head down, push on without a trace Time now to let go If this was the place to rest Id already know Tracing lines upon your face If I stay too long my tired bones will bind me to this place I’ll write you a song I'll sing to you someday I’ll buy you a book and I’ll read to you everyday Send you pictures of a home I’ll live in one day If I can quiet my panicked thoughts that lead me Lead me astray Keep me moving on Keep me moving on

Losing 04:36
A child of good fortune lost in his time Mind on the job A dragonfly casket, some pins and a cork board And a message to God Through all of my lifetime the walls kept on falling The message was clear But now that I’m ageing our memories are fading Only left with our fears I was someone who was losing Someone who was losing; I was left behind I was someone who was losing Someone who was losing a piece of my mind No more than a shadow held in the lamplight A stranger in full view The heart of the city rolled to a standstill In memory of you I can still feel it now as white clouds come down Row after row Backs to the nightlife, I reach out for tomorrow A stranger no more I was someone who was losing Someone who was losing; I was left behind I was someone who was losing Someone who was losing a piece of my mind Phrenology’s calling, To instincts that we had before An inbuilt resistance, To those who are wounded to the core The masks are all falling The fiction we've written unbound A storm of our creation Sends it all crashing to the ground

If nothing was to ever change, if we could all just stay the same Would I mean something to you If I could remain right here, lending you a loving ear Would I mean something Anything at all Would I mean something, to you If I could erase the past, take back the things for which you never asked, Would you feel something at all If I could have tried to see, the only thing you wanted from me Was to be something to you Would you feel something Anything at all Would you feel something at all If I could find a way, to stop these demons leading me astray, Could I be someone to you, If nature is as nature does, could I do something for those I love Something different, could I go against my nature Could I be someone Anyone at all Could I be someone to you But sometime the only way, to be there is not to stay, Let me mean something to you, If every day that we go on, Is one more memory trod upon One more fight that we’ll regret Or a silence that we won’t forget Let’s remember our last laugh Keep one good photograph Let me mean something Anything at all Let me mean something to you Let me mean something to you

about

Mercury is the third solo album from multi-award winning Scottish singer-songwriter Siobhan Miller and her first of entirely original material. Recorded in Glasgow with many of her frequent collaborators, including producer Euan Burton, it also features co-writes with Lau's Kris Drever and Admiral Fallow frontman Louis Abbott.
One of the themes of the album is memory, what we take with us over the years as the 'important moments', the precious nature of those memories and the curious process during which our brain decides what it will filter out without us really having control over it. Many of the songs see Miller looking at what we leave behind us in various chapters of our own lives and where we are headed for, individually and as a society.
Her two previous albums received widespread critical acclaim, highlighting her extensive range through traditional, contemporary and self-penned material, as well as her "delicate, nourishing vocals and lyrically rich compositions" (The List). Winner of the 2018 BBC Radio 2 Folk Award for 'Best Traditional Track', at which she was also nominated for 'Best Singer', Miller is the only ever three-time winner of Scots Singer of the Year (2017, 2013, 2011), and widely regarded as one of the foremost vocalists in Scotland. She has made numerous TV and Radio appearances including a cameo in TV series 'Outlander'.
